Little Boat

You’re
thousands
of miles
away
you’ve become
a dream
a memory
you come
to me
in dreams
I don’t
remember

Lost
like a boat
set free
in a storm
you drift
further
out to sea
while I remain
ashore
watching you
bob and toss
in surf

just like my
dreams
of you
makes me toss
and turn
at night

I remember
months ago
when you
slept
next to me
in the little
row boat
of your dreams
you bobbed
and tossed
you’re dreams
taking you
out to sea

and farther
away
from me

Ogre

Alone
I sit
staring
at the dormant
ogre
Diamond Head
a husk
of former
glory
as a volcano
spewing
itself
to create
the lush
island
Oahu
now
green
it disappears
into night
a looming
ghost
dark
as dark
as
night

Amber

The day
started
with heavy
clouds
like gray
oven mitts
over the ridge
above my house
Clouds
to the west
were maroon
streamers
skating
across the
sky
The sun
has now crested
the ridge
its warm light
like a low watt
light bulb
bathes
my bedroom
in
amber

Every Night

Every night
I ask God
to bless
me
with peaceful
and beautiful
dreams
and

every night

I dream
of you

I know
I dream
of you
because of longing
I feel
when I
awaken

All Night (for Juan)

The west
is midnight
blue like
mascara
and the east
has begun
to bleed blue
like blue gills
we used to catch
off the pier
in northern
Wisconsin
sunlight
like icycles
began to fall
on the comforter
beneath where you
slept the sunlight
danced on your
eyelashes
making them
twinkle
the slivers
of light
caused your eyes
to open slowly
still bathed
in sleep

turning to me
you opened your
eyes
and looked
at me

weren’t you
here when I
fell asleep
you asked

yes
I replied

all
night
