With coffee on board
and dressed in jammies
I settle down to
watch the kaleidoscope morning
sky spin and twirl
with the same unabashed
excitement as schoolgirl
ballet performers unashamedly free
if I listen closely
enough I can hear
giggles of glee as
the clouds open to
sunlight like those same
children’s smiles upon hearing
the applause from parents
and siblings and friends
Oh that coffee’s hot
What a marvelous morning

Here’s the punch line
ahead of the joke
You have no idea
Before the world was
what the world is
it was definitely different
Firstly you were taught
you were taught things
important things like respect
and honor and kindness
and loyalty and compassion
and oh geez manners
But now now what
do we have we
have dropouts not from
school but from the
lessons of life that
in fact and before
everyone found essentially important
to living a life
true to humanity itself
So what’s the joke
this is the joke
Selfishness
Selfish of self
is different than
selfish towards others
Selfish of self
is focusing ones
energy and soul
on its betterment
Selfish towards others
immediately implies that
you have not
yet done the
hard work of
focusing on yourself
in order to
understand just what
you can give
to others so
instead you take
That’s the difference
