If in life
one remembers the
reason and not
the thing then
one takes with
all of everything
and leaves that
which is then
nothing for others

Christmas trees
to me
are family
at least
while they
are visiting
telling stories
they remind
giving joy
they receive
our adoration
but then
they go
like most
relatives do
into obscurity
until next
year when
they will
visit again

I am now
ready to receive
having already done
the hardest work
as though I’ve
traveled many miles
or maybe none
for distance isn’t
the measure and
neither is time
for neither exists
when it comes
to the soul

ready to receive
being now empty
ready to fill
and finally overflow

for our
world is
that we’d
learn to
love ourselves
