to breathing 
foreheads touching 
and rhythm 
you exhaling 
me inhaling 
like oars
breaking water 
a very 
quiet dance 
in which 
we two 
were one 
and like 
most things 
even sleeping 
you turned 
too intimate 
for comfort

in our 
past the 
present isn’t 
a reference 
point or 
a reflection 
of what 
happened before 
the past
might be 
the present 
isn’t nor
was it 
ever meant 
to be 
that way 
we make 
it so

Funny how 
we think 
of the 
past as
always better 
when we
don’t like 
the present 
we seem 
to always 
be looking 
somewhere else 
besides where 
we are 
for happiness 
and really 
what is 
so bad 
at simply
