Morning

Morning is a magical
time for me when
people and ghosts rest
it is eerily quiet
serene and peaceful before
everyone awakens and turns
calm into selfish scurrying
pursuit a great time
of intimacy and exposure
when all of us
whether lion or mouse
stirs moves and ambles
shaking off the dust
of our dreams before

Blatz

There used to be
a Blatz sign above
a bar that had
a deer park attached
that my dad would
take us to on
Saturday afternoons when I
was a kid men
smoked cigars there and
now as I smoke
one outside on this
Colorado summer morning the
wind in the leaves
make the same sound
as the tinkling of
that Blatz sign and
though I’m thousands of
miles away I’m not
I really am not

IAmMyFather

Well I went out
with a hurrah much
less hurrah and much
more fizzle I never
knew that I was
an angry bitter old
man who knew that
I became my father
Maybe life does that
shows you as a
child just what you’re
likely to be old
I guess it’s true
I am my father

BeADuck

I oftentimes feel like
a mallard trying to
find a comfortable place
to sit upon eggs
Sitting upon dreams soon
to be realities is
never easy whether they
be ducklings career or
love we all have
dreams having dreams is
easy but tending to
them warming them and
protecting them from the
elements and from predators
and the many naysayers
takes courage fortitude and
strength whether those dreams
quack or maybe roar

BeingAnything

Being anything with yourself
is harder than being
anything with anyone else
Let’s start with forgiveness
forgiving others is easy
we all do it
all of the time
But when was the
last time that you
forgave yourself or let’s
try selfishness we all
have been selfish with
others but when was
the last time you
allowed yourself to be
selfish with you being
almost anything with yourself
is in fact the
cornerstone of your happiness
No not your happiness
with others but only
your happiness with yourself
