And as I sit
watching the sun rise
behind me like a
sneaky child looking for
a hug the dawn
smiles upon the tallest
peaks still snow covered
turning them colors like
a kaleidoscope I had
so majestic making everything
around them both other
mountains and man bow
in their quiet humility
It’s quite simply stunning

SelfishMorning
Oh how I wish
that you were here
on this chilly morning
to roll over onto
and into warming me
staving off the need
to stray out of
bed and into cold
to ignite the fire
and warm the house
being content with my
morning selfishness with warming
myself and leaving the
rest of the world
to its own devices
I’m simply not ready
yet to care about
anyone else but us

Oh now the dawn
sky turns to a
blue of smoky opal
a depth and richness
known only to treasure
The Rockies appear as
an apparition from the
night like craggy cliffs
emerging from the mist
certain to crush hope
of the new world
The eastern faces of
tall buildings blush rose
as if they’ve been
caught thinking dirty things
Dawn here in Denver
is such a delicate
slow dance between lovers
Heaven’sReminder
From my bedroom window
I see the lights of
Denver and while listening
to jazz I watch
the sky lighten dousing
the importance of the
nights skyline with this
breaking day as though
God Himself reminds us
that we may have
the night He will
always have the day

Sitting in the cafe
staring out the window
coffee steaming beside me
I see Denver morning
after a night snowfall
The grass is sprinkled
with powdered bakers sugar
looking like dusty tables
And the railroad signs
wear little white derbies
looking all gentlemen like
There’s this one trees
trunk cast in plaster
While tops of cars
wear opaque shower caps
So this is Denver
