And one day
Long ago I
Left him there
Right where I
Found him worse
For the wear
And filled with
Adventures and conquest
And battles and
Picnics but I
Never ever forgot
My first friend
That homely ruddy
One eyed bear
And one day
Long ago I
Left him there
Right where I
Found him worse
For the wear
And filled with
Adventures and conquest
And battles and
Picnics but I
Never ever forgot
My first friend
That homely ruddy
One eyed bear
We all make
A mark somewhere
In this life
Sometimes as broad
As shoveling
A path through
Snow drifts or
The placement of
Bread atop refrigerators
That change how
We see things
Or find things
Yet some are
As subtle as
A thumbprint on
Those you love
Ah a smile
Like a galaxy
Of individual stars
Staring at me
Like the lights
Of Christmas trees
Twinkling behind ornaments
Like early sunrise
And harvest moons
Like that very
First crisp bite
Of a freshly
Picked autumn apple
Like those cheesy
Grins in old
Childhood photographs which
Now embarrass everyone
Like mirrors into
Your soul like
Whispers into ears
Just like you
Look at me
Why is it
That when I
Have dreams about
My long gone
Pets I wake
Up with the
Same heavy dull
Heartbreak of loss
And welling tears
As if I’ve
Rediscovered the death
Of my dearest
Dearest loved ones
Because they are
At my age
Nightmares are often
About the death
Of lost love
Creating an ache
I cannot shake
Frightened to sleep
And remember again
And so we
Met and came
Together again not
Like before but
New exposed and
Naked no promises
Simply hope that
Each of us
Will be happy
That’s our blessing
To each other
