I have a friend
who’s an old car
familiar just not reliable
newness has worn off
leaving me with ordinary
a staple a thing
that much like me
carries around joyful memories
and has begun needing
more maintenance more time
away in the shop
getting tinkered and poked
and prodded with possibility
of it being this
or maybe even that
and now this last
time it went away
it returned to me
accepting that it was
just another old car
whose miles were behind
and no longer ahead

A red squirrel
visits me daily
I feed him
chestnuts wishing to
keep him around
it’s a squirrel
after all only
one of many
but it’s the
one and the
only one that
comes here comes
closest comes routinely
and this squirrel
has now become
my children and
my grandchildren that
I never had
the great fortune
of watching play
