Why are some
like picking flowers
while others are
like sawing wood
flowers are delicate
and plucked easily
arranged lovingly and
slowly turned here
and turned there
always finding sun
wood is hard
and knotted causing
stops and starts
wood is heavy
and weighty dirty
difficult definitely challenging
when we’re younger
we pick flowers
learning they die
but wood oh
wood once fallen
discovers its beauty

And when we are
just laying here before
or after what we
do do best there’s
this silence it’s the
same not heard emptiness
as that moment just
before or recently after
the clash of hordes
of men intent on
the defending or taking
of what’s rightfully theirs
one brings hope and
the other lays waste
but it’s the silence
the gap where the
image of triumph or
defeat and not the
in-between that excites men
and it excites us

We always double back
you and I do
we always seem to
find some reason to
whether good or bad
we seem to be
the gum or paper
on the shoe bottom
stepped into maybe unseen
but always under foot
you say you do
I know that I
find you in places
you have never been
a mirage you appear
as though you should
be there with me
but you never are
so back we come
and away we go
me being the tide
and you the beach
Knowing
One of the hardest
things you’ll ever decide
is what you want
Oh we know what
we always dream about
who we’ll be with
and where we’ll live
and how famous and
rich we will be
But those are dreams
What we want questions
often begin to surface
when what we have
is beginning to fall
short fade and crumble
A friend of mine
once suggested that rather
than trying to decide
what we want instead
admit what we don’t
just like when I
have struggled with the
notion that God is
everything which brings with
it lots of thinking
whereas thinking that God
is also nothing brings
with that idea peace
think less to know
