Juan

I fell
in love
today

again today

with Juan

his brown
eyes
set between
pecan shaped
lids

his smile is
broad and
warm
and reminds
me of how
I kissed him

So many
memories
fly by like
Canadian Geese

I reach out
to grab them
but Juan’s
thousands
of miles
away

Wednesday (for David)

We went
to dine
at a beachside
café
rain erupted
from black clouds
David wore
a raincoat
he looked like
a scout
we walked
from the
beachside café
to a bar
arm in arm
in rain
and wind

Tenderness (for David)

He’s enterprising
working
as a server
in a chic burger
joint in Waikiki
knees and feet
ache he says
been on them
for eight hours
like marching
marines
or a date
with new shoes
I rub them
sometimes
rubbing the ache
out substituting
tenderness

Paradise (for David)

I’m attracted
to him moth
to light I
buzz around
him excited
laughing
like a nervous
teenager
to the football
captain
like the moth
I can’t help
but circle
around
afraid of the light
yet mesmerized
by its danger

Clowns (for David)

The last
night we
dined
we laughed
so loud
like air
raid sirens
that we
were asked
to stop
Hannah
our server
was funny
too and
we laughed
and laughed
like clowns
