. . .

I came to
Denver to write
well actually no
I came to
Denver to be
alongside of Rick
who was there
when writing began
decades and decades
ago and the
image which always
comes to mind
when I think
of our friendship
is the ellipse
you know the
dot dot dot
the first dot
and the last
being interchangeable actually
him or I
and the middle
being almost anything
else life love
love life triumphs
and or tragedies
we are but
each others bookends
keeping whatever else
ever happens between
us two just
a couple of
dots with another
dot any dot
in the middle

Reborn

And now after
all of this
what I want
more than anything
is to awaken
just that awaken
to this life
this life that’s
mine mine only
having shed others
who have before
I had worn
thinking they’d protected
me from life
but rather than
protect they kept
me from it
now I sleep
naked as I
did before all
of this started
awakening every single
day just like
I did that
very first time

Crippling

Why do we
continually wish for
the precise thing
we don’t need
a stick in
the eye a
meal we can’t
finish one drink
too many why
do we expose
ourselves to the
very thing that
will cripple us
for me it
was your smile
I didn’t need
another smile in
fact the last
thing that I
needed was a
smile specifically yours

Masquerade

Liars and lies
are the minstrels
and the songs
that are sung
it used to
be limited to
entertainment but now
entertainment is reality
we have become
a culture of
fabrication little stick
people hiding behind
the masks of
profiles parading around
as though life
is just one
big masquerade ball

Shadow

How did I
disappear said my
shadow to me
once I was
here and now
I am not
what makes me
so it asked
and not you
You are special
I quietly replied
needing something else
to appear whereas
I and not
you am the
ghost walking amongst
others needing nothing
to be invisible
