After a lifetime
of avoiding things
the simplest things
that makes one
independent and interesting
I have learned
that there’s pleasure
in simply doing
And now not
only do I
do for myself
but I also
want to do
for you and
again it’s the
simple do doing
that makes me
do for you

life has
suffered equally
it’s far
too easy
to point
and say
how lucky
luck has
absolutely nothing
to do
with it
whereas sacrifice
always does

I guess that
some people give
in order to
get that some
people please so
that they are
pleased and some
choose to belong
in order to
feel they deserve
oh but me
I have found
my greatest comfort
on the fringes
I’m the decoration
never the pillow
I don’t bring
comfort but rather
that silly thing
you twirl with
when you’re thinking
about something else

There’s a thing
that often happens
well I think
that it does
well it has
to me now
once you’ve crawled
back or away
from whatever bottom
that you have
you first survive
and you regain
the simple things
strength and courage
once you’ve leapt
from the iceberg
and onto land
feet under you
what comes next
is quite surprising
it’s called comfort
and followed by
freedom to express
those simple things
that you know
make you you

at this point
I’m taken back
to a time
when I lived
on a farm
and every morning
a donkey ran
up to me
from the hill
honking and honking
making the same
sound as my
washing machine now
a simpler time
