A red squirrel
visits me daily
I feed him
chestnuts wishing to
keep him around
it’s a squirrel
after all only
one of many
but it’s the
one and the
only one that
comes here comes
closest comes routinely
and this squirrel
has now become
my children and
my grandchildren that
I never had
the great fortune
of watching play

now live far away
except for the one
for whom I moved
closer to be near

has known me since
college and I like
a pension is his
to keep to spend
and to enjoy throughout
the rest of his

and I being both
besties and our retirement
Ages
Having acquired most
and experienced more
I am left
now to wonder
is this it
I’m done traveling
to distant places
exploring new cultures
learning new lives
I’ve had tragedies
and my triumphs
and now I
wonder if life
at this age
belongs to reminiscence
and why then
if that’s so
is life cruel
for the gaiety
that youth was
should never be
remembered just as
this now old
age back then
could never ever
have been imagined
life you should
not make one
age responsible to
ever even think
about the other
