The sun bathes
downtown buildings orange 
like I’m staring 
into a once 
burning camp fire 
seeing the embers 
breathe last breath 
surrounded by the 
ashes of mountains 
and I remember 
just moments before 
this very thing 
the nervousness of 
that very first 
of so many 
that then followed 

Playful now 
is all
I seek
for serious 
I’ve had 
and the 
grind of
same has
worn down 
this heart
to smooth 

Even in your 
silence I know 
even though distance 
comes and stretches 
our touch and 
even though uncertain 
winds blow these
very things bind 
you to me 
for the things 
of earth can’t 
deny what the 
Divine called something 
so very true 

Life is
a piano
not all 
the keys 
go together 
but those 
that do 
play the 
sweetest melody 

I’ve built this 
to be mine
to be mindful 
and at peace 
and I’ve learned 
that not anyone 
not just anyone 
deserves to be 
here with me 
for my happiness 
both with here
and with me 
is not meant 
to be given 
to just anyone
