Contact

I spent the early
hours playing a game
of he loves me
he loves me not
in my contact list
not surprisingly I suppose
the he loves me
far outweighed the nots
at the purges start
but with a dollop
of chagrin I couldn’t
remember half the names
who they belonged to
or why they mattered
they must’ve some time
but out they went
as quickly and quietly
as the flames that
they once were warming
some part of myself
now condemned to unknown

IYouCoffeeToo

I smelled my sunrise
this morning before seeing
its warm rays wafting
from the other room
following the bewitching aroma
I lumbered through rooms
and hallways to discover
my enchanter standing over
a percolator conjuring mysteries
wearing my yesterday’s shirt
approaching from behind him
like a curious vine
wrapping around his back
clinging to his front
I dryly kiss throat
as his head leans
forward and then back
like a scale measuring
the weights of affection
in unison we whispered
I you started this
and yes we did
whether it be coffee
or even this our
own type of dawn

MissMaybe

I miss them all
each one of them
and at night now
I sit in darkness
wondering
I sit in darkness
wondering
when maybe and if
maybe I’ll see another
maybe
I sit in darkness
wondering when maybe where
maybe and if maybe
I will ever stop
missing them like this
wondering

maybe

CoffeeUs

I plunge my coffee
in a French press
after letting it steep
what I have noticed
even with coffee grounds
is that they gather
just like my memories
of you and me
locking ill fitting pieces
together forming a blockade
letting nothing pass through
just like my memories
of you and me
and what I do
is raise the plunger
setting the grounds free
to swirl around and
regather together but never
as naturally as first
and this I think
that you and I
are just like coffee
having once been beans
then ground haphazardly together
then mixed then steeped
just like my memories
of you and me
for us to enjoy
piping hot again together

News

It’s the news that
you know is coming yet
you never wish to
hear it’s never uttered
by those involved but
shared by someone else
he’s dying I’m told
it’s a sucker punch
you think of him
first naturally but then
as the shock washes
over you you think
of yourself and remember
it’s the remembrance that
pulls the air out
like a vacuum picking
up dirt and dust
and then they come
the tears oh the
tears not because of
sadness but of joy
for then you know
that he will go
and he will remain
a part of you
