There’s no rhyme nor
Reason why two people
Friends lovers or otherwise
That are essentially different
Yet attract one another
Some may say that
They see what’s missing
In the other but
I think not I think
That what brings
Two different people together
Friends lovers or otherwise
Are their shared strengths
For strength can be
That shoulder upon which
To lean that hand
In which to hold
That smile that invites
And that wink which
Causes a shadowy blush
We all need someone
Not just anyone but
A really good someone
I know I do
And when I don’t
I feel listless lost
Like a shoe that’s
Lost its partner or
Like an envelope that
Lost its postage what’s
One to do when
One isn’t going to
Ever be as good
As two
Whoops I am drinking
Now that that’s out
Of the way allow
Me to say this
Life and love hurts
It really really does
Some idiots do choose
To shoulder through it
Like a fullback protecting
The ball plowing through
Me well I drink
It gives me courage
To say what I
Think I think so
Many things and none
Of them have voice
I sometimes wonder what
What if we all
All did just this
This giving the voice
Voice to our thoughts
Thoughts that might change
Change how we do
Do all these things
This morning’s sky
Reminds me of
My uncle’s cigar
Many years ago
In Port Washington
Hanging there against
The backdrop of
His thin beard
The center glowed
Crimson almost winking
Surrounded by gray
Ash it hung
There then gone
Between his laughter
There then gone
Between the clouds
Soon to be
All but ash
As he stubbed
It out like
The sunrise does
To the dawn
Love is like fetch
With a new toy
Sometimes it’s even like
A note in a
Bottle written kidnapped and
Tossed hopefully into sea
Wishing that whomever finds
It will be tickled
But love’s really like
A falling coconut if
You’re not under the
Palm it’ll be missed
But if you’re under
Oh if you’re under
Then you’ll be under
Forever you will be
