There’s a log jam
The recently fallen trees
of my thoughts have
floated down river and
gathered near the dam
of my hands caught
there and piling up
not making it to
the freedom of fingers
So I wait watching
and wondering which if
any will slam into
the pile forcing the
others further down stream
and onto these pages
but for now I
sit and wait and
watch and think impatiently

I sometimes think that
dating is a lot
like ice fishing you
get all bundled up
stagger out onto ice
cut a hole drop
a line and wait
and wait and wait
Then comes a nibble
then comes a bite
up the line goes
and nothing but a
bare hook so off
you go having done
nothing but feed the
fishes it’s always been
about the fishes and
never ever about you

OnPurpose
When I was sixteen
I helped train hunting
dogs in the scorching
heat of the flatlands
of South Dakota the
land is so flat
that I was certain
that the far off
horizon was one step
away from the edge
of the world hunting
dogs aren’t treated kindly
certainly not like a
family dog oh no
they are bred for purpose
a very specific purpose
and like soldiers they
do their jobs precisely
I was terrible at
training these hunting dogs
sleeping with them within
an arms reach of
their three foot chain
One morning the training
master found me there
he said let them
dogs be they have
purpose and don’t need
no friendly reminder that
they’re anything but that
and that was the
day that I decided
that I’d do anything
to never ever be
just considered on purpose
yet it does kind
of sound like capitalism

What is not important
is to have friends
for friends unlike you
causes dissonance and distraction
and dissonance causes discomfort
oh it is okay
to sometimes swim
with the ducks but
when you are a
swan only other swans
can show you how
go find your gaggle
your herd your flock
even though your intention
of leading by example
is too often admirable
more often than not
those who are anchors
will never ever float
