I have noticed 
that the leaves 
farther from the 
trunk of trees 
do turn first
like I imagine 
soldiers do too
those on the 
front lines feeling 
first the change 
those further back 
hold on longer 
not only loyal 
but also wiser
very few leaves 
ever become trees
and very few 
soldiers become generals
